After her only friend at the Lowood Institution dies, Jane reaches an even more damaged state. When Brontë skips eight years ahead in Jane’s life, we find her still carrying the scars of her youth. Jane is somewhat of a pushover to the young girl she tutors (who is must like Jane’s spoiled cousins) and has trouble asserting herself over Mr. Rochester and his fiancé. Brontë’s inclusion of the childhood scenes allows us to understand more deeply why Jane acts the way that she does. She is constantly referred to as “plain”, a description she is content with after having been told so frequently by her cousins and aunt. Without the details provided by Brontë earlier in the novel, it is possible that readers would be confused as to why Jane is so acceptant of her treatment and social standing within the Thornfield manor.
As well as manipulating time to give the reader details, which explain Jane’s personality later in the novel, Brontë uses it to compare the young and old Jane as well. From what we read of at the beginning of the novel, Jane is meek and lacks self-esteem and the confidence to stand up for herself. By the end of Jane Eyre, however, Jane has grown into a strong and assertive woman whose personality is hardened from the experiences at the Thornfield manor. Jane falls in love with a man only to discover that his striking appearance hides a dark secret. After fleeing from the chaos that proceeds, mostly on account of Mr. Rochester’s insane wife, Jane depends on herself to make a living and finally indulges to her desire of teaching poor children the way she believes they should be taught. Jane’s independence contrasts sharply with the insecurity we saw in the beginning two thirds of the novel, juxtaposition only possible with Brontë’s use of time. As a result of the plot device, we connect with Jane more and appreciate her growth.
Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is the romantic story of two lovers who handle troubles and triumphs. The novel is also the journey of a woman from insecurity to independence and the experiences that cause her to get there. In great literature and famous dramas, memorable lines are repeated again and again, many times being used in modern movies and novels as well; they often provide foreshadowing while presenting the mood and feeling that the characters are set in. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the ultimate tragedy of a hero’s decent into madness, feelings of greed, betrayal, and guilt flow into one another during the constantly dark mood of the play. In Macbeth, Shakespeare uses precise diction and vague foreshadowing in the witch's phrases and quotes to introduce the themes of everything not being what it seems and betrayal causing self-destruction.
The famous quote by the witches in Macbeth, “Fair is foul, and foul is fair”, is a strong clue as to what theme the play is going to carry. Shakespeare’s concise diction allows the reader to remember this one line and consider it throughout the play. His use of alliteration in “fair” and “foul”, as well as the symmetry in the syntax of the quote, also serve as memory devices that engrain this quote in one’s memory. As far as the meaning of the quote, Shakespeare writes this phrase as the last line of Scene 1 to suggest that the things that appear benevolent are evil underneath and what appears evil is really masking benevolence, or everything is not what it seems. This theme comes into play with the character of Macbeth himself; he appears a loyal, brave soldier who quickly turns on the king, killing him for this position at the throne. It appears again in the witches’ predictions. Macbeth rejoices upon hearing that he will one day be king, though he does not suspect the repercussions that will come along with this fate. Later in the play, the witches tell him that no man who is woman-born will be the one to kill Macbeth. Assuming that all men are woman-born, Macbeth thinks nothing of this and is blissfully oblivious to the fact that Macduff is not, in fact, “woman-born”, that is until he is murdered. Shakespeare uses clever diction and syntax to make this line memorable and applicable to the rest of the play.
The theme of betrayal causing self-destruction is also evident through the witches singsong like rhyme, a rhyme that is still used in songs today. When the witches say “When the hurlyburly’s done, When the battle’s lost and won. There will be ere the set of sun.” they refer to the entire plot of Macbeth but in vague, subtle terms. Shakespeare uses rhyme to emphasize this point and cause the reader to take notice. The “battle” is Macbeth’s fight for the crown and, in essence, power. In a way, the battle is both “lost and won” because of his short lived glory as king but his quick murder by Macduff. The witches state that the “set of sun”, or end of the story, will arrive after Macbeth has been through all of the looming “hurlyburly”. The themes emphasized here are apparent throughout the play and become more so as we watch the actions played out.

The nature of the conflict as well as the toll it takes on Macbeth emphasizes Shakespeare’s meaning.

A man of stature and social standing, Macbeth was well respected in the community and seen as responsible and dependable. These personality traits make Macbeth’s actions later in the play more shocking and effective to the reader, who would not expect a man like Macbeth to do such things. Although Macbeth is originally a pure man with morals, his wife, Lady Macbeth, has ever growing desires of power and wealth for her family. Her wishes rub off on Macbeth, who wants to please and provide for his wife. After listening to her constant urging and the witches’ prophecies, Macbeth is driven to believing what they say and wanting the same things as his wife. The effects of his newfound desire for power, and his betrayal of the king, cause Macbeth to begin his descent to insanity and eventually death. The guilt he feels takes the form of ghosts that him and repetitive visions that constantly remind him of what he has done. The nature of the conflict as well as the toll it takes on Macbeth emphasizes Shakespeare’s meaning.
The effects of this internal war on Macbeth add to Shakespeare’s statement about humanity. Macbeth exemplifies the typical man of high social standing who is corrupted by greed and eventually gains nothing. Shakespeare uses this internal struggle as the main conflict, supported by physical conflicts. The internal turmoil in Macbeth is viewed as the most important conflict in the book, a plot element exemplified by the fact that the actual murdering of King Duncan is left out of the play completely. When Macbeth confronts the demands of the passion (in his statement in which he recognizes that he has lead himself to his own death), there is nothing he is able to do to prevent it. This supports Shakespeare’s theme that humans are often so overcome by greed and personal desire that they lose their morals.
The tragedy of Macbeth is the story of the dramatic fall of a hero. Previously a responsible man, Macbeth has no one to blame but himself for his fall from grace. Shakespeare uses the buildup to Macbeth’s recognition of his flaw and the recognition itself to prove that humans are sometimes slave to personal traits and desires.

ReplyDelete1. Instead of using the prompt for forming the first sentence of your essay, you may want to use an outside instance to introduce your writing.
2. In your thesis, you need to state what are the personality traits that are noteworthy in the novel rather than saying that they are.
3. The majority of your first body paragraph is plot summary that ends with a sentence or so of analysis of time playing a factor in avoiding the confusion of Jane's acceptance of the treatment she received at the Thornfield Manor. You may want to explain in more detail why exactly time played this role and why exactly the author utilized this technique.
4. Your second body paragraph is strong as it provides detailed analysis of the impact of time on the metamorphosis in Jane's personality.
5. You have mainly used only the literary technique of detail, lending you with little basis for conveying your evidence and validating it with warrants.
6. The conclusion does a good job of wrapping up the essay by referring to Jane's personality changes as a result of the rough years.

I like essay overall. I would have made it longer because you obviously know the book well. But I think that hurt you a little in that you did a lot of summarizing rather than analyzing. One direct quote would have been nice, although I realize that is not easy on a real AP test. The essay could have used a little more length, and more usage of DIDLS techniques would have been nice.

ReplyDeleteYour analysis of the effectiveness of the line "Foul is fair, and fair is foul" is very thorough, supported with string evidence and scholarly discussion playing the greater part. As the prompt says that you are supposed to use a specific line or passage, I was wondering whether the lines/phrases/words in your third paragraph are from the same passage as the line above. I feel that you strayed in the second paragraph in connecting the lines to the work itself by mainly relying on summarizing rather than analyzing specifically how and why the lines relate to the work. Overall, I felt that your essay could have been stronger with a few changes here and there to produce a well-written piece that accurately addresses the prompt.

ReplyDeleteI feel that a majority of your essay consists of plot summary, which is vague at times due to the overuse of proper nouns that create confusion while reading. Your essay is limited in scholarly analysis and where you do analyze the text for society's idiosyncrasies, it is redundant at the end of both body paragraphs and is unable to completely address the "why" of the prompt as reflected in the novel. You may want to try and look at each of the relationships between the protagonist and the other characters separately and produce a combined interpretation. Finally, I think you should demonstrate how the relationships and the values of society reinforce rather than give rise to societal peculiarities.

ReplyDeleteAs the prompt is about the first chapter of a work of literature, I would refrain from using "The American Dream" as a novel of choice due to a lack of distinct divisions in the novel by chapter. If you do use this novel, you should state from the beginning the pages or scenes that your essay will be covering.
I feel that your essay focuses too much on Mommy and fails to acknowledge the other characters of the novel. Throughout your two body paragraph, you talk solely about Mommy and the symbols that she highlights through her actions. You ma want to incorporate more than one side of the argument with regards to, for example, the issue of conformity. Another side of this argument may add the perspective of societal hierarchy. Overall, your essay requires more broad and a little more deep analysis of the first chapter/few scenes of the novel.

Your thesis does well in adressing meaning to the witch's lines, and is supported withen the body paragraphs, but by too much summary and not enough comentary. ReplyDeleteYour thesis is not incorrect, but the evidence you use in the body paragraphs may not be specific enough to supoort it well, since you tend to give summary that can be confusing to someone who has never read the play. One thing you could do to strengthen your thesis in your body paragraphs would be to address the deeper meaning of each of the relationships your describe.

ReplyDeleteHere, you do a better job of adding meaning in the end of your body paragrahs that support your thesis, even ifthere is still quite a bit of summary. One thing you could discuss to improve this prompt would be the reloationship between characters, not just mommy as a character herself; although she is an important character, she is not the only one. Often ,we want to be specific with arguments, but here, it would be beneficial to adress a broad theme and sevearl ways it is supported in the beggining of the play.
10/16 Again, you have a very strongly structured essay. You summarize only what is necessary, and utilize organization well. I would suggest starting out your essays with more interesting, or less sweeping statements, which can tend to be clichéd or obvious. Also, I haven’t read the book so im not sure, but authors themes are usually more sweeping statements, so perhaps change from specifically upper class Wessex, to the upper class in general. My only other comment is that I was impressed with your second paragraph topic sentence, discussing the use of setting to create tone, and thus meaning. However, I thought that your more re stated your previous points than followed up on this topic sentence.

You could have probably been more precise with your second paragraph analysis, and possibly addressed more themes in the overall play, but this was a great essay.

Really fantastic breakdown of Fair is Foul in the first paragraph, including the syntax, thematic consequences, and tying it all back to your thesis about making it memorable, which is a pretty unique and interesting thesis. My only criticism for this whole piece is that im dubious that you had the second line memorized, the hurlyey burley one. Haha, I would have done the same thing, and you analyze that well two, but keep in mind that on the AP, you wont have Wikipedia or your lit book. Or I could be wrong, in which case KUDOS.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice of a betrayal, and a really great intro. The only thing i would change about this (other than the fact that this essay is shorter than kim kardashian's marriage...SLAM) is to offer more evidence and examples in the part where you relate the betrayal to the overall message.
ReplyDeleteI'm tired and the font is small and the screen is bright. Enough of my complaining. The word betrayal never really came to mind when I think about DOS, however it works nicely the way you wrote this essay. You used a great direct quote, one that really sticks with the reader. However, I would argue that Willy and Biff's relationship wasn't good , even before the betrayal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Doug that I don't immediately think of betrayal as a word to use in describing Death of a Salesman, but I think you make it work anyway. You use good details in supporting your position, though you could have used a few more direct quotations to really drive home the point, but I'd also maybe argue that more than Willy is betraying his marriage, he's betraying Biff-- or Biff's image of him.

I think that you need to explain why more in the opening paragraph. I think that you need to explain why Biff and Happy's relationship failing symbolizes the collapse of the american dream, it seems like you kind of jumped to that conclusion. Other then that you do a really good job explaining it in the rest of the essay.
I really like your essay from teh end of October, it transitions seamlessly from paragraph to paragraph and explain your opinion very eloquently and also tie it up very nicely at the end. (the one from your first to second paragraphs was the best).
your essay from the 16th is also really good. I've never read the book but now I want to! I think that the first sentance of your third paragraph could be cleaned up a bit. You say that there were differences between "sociatal members" but really were all member of some form of society, I think you should be more specific.
1980 (Macbeth) Essay:
ReplyDeleteYour thesis doesn't completely answer the prompt, because you don't make a claim about what effects this conflict has on Macbeth. Your theme claim is a bit weak--"the conflicting needs and wants of human beings" is vague and doesn't really encompass the intense passion of this play. You do kind of start to address the dropped goal later in the essay--in the last support paragraph--but you don't really develop the idea. Instead, you hurry into an underdeveloped discussion of theme. This section of the essay would be way better if you separated it into two paragraphs--one with a claim about the effects on Macbeth and one about how all of this supports Shakespeare's theme.
You also have some sloppy claim (topic) sentences. Look at that first support paragraph, for instance. Since your thesis's first claim is that Macbeth has a conflict between his responsibilities and his desires, this should be the topic of your first paragraph. But your claim sentence (topic sentence) is something about "Specific facts" adding to Macbeth's "recognition of the tragic flaw." First, that's not what this paragraph needs to be about. Second, that doesn't make sense, because a literary character doesn't recognize the aspects of tragedy--the reader does. I know it sounds like I'm nit-picking, but this is the kind of thing that stops a reader short and makes him or her puzzle for a minute about what you mean and where you're really headed before getting back into the flow of your essay--which can bring your score down.
